Now that we’ve had one issue from each of our Absolute trio, it’s time to decide if we should continue with these issues.
The short answer, Abso-fu**ing-lutley. If you haven’t managed to snag a copy yet, go to your nearest local comic shop and pick them up! (if you can find them) Now Absolute Batman has already put out issue 2 and it was another banger.
Quick recaps of the first issue of each series below: SPOILER FREE
Absolute Batman / Issue #1 / Scott Snyder & Nick Dragotta
Going off of James Gunn’s / Co-Chief of DC Studios Threads post, there doesn’t need to be a focus on origin stories for Batman and Superman, this feels like the right way to approach it. We get a totally new look at this battled kid turned tough beast without the entire issue being the same old story of how Bruce Wayne’s parents are gunned down.
Bruce Wayne having friendships with previously known villains and a fresh take on Alfred makes this issue an extremely fresh and much needed take. I will admit, I was one to criticize the big ass chonky batman badge on his chest but I TAKE IT ALL BACK NOW. I loved how Batman utilizes it and shows us a much more brutal take on Gotham’s late night detective. I highly recommend it.
Absolute Superman / Issue #1 / Jason Aaron, Steve Orlando & Pop Mhan, Rafa Sandoval
I know there is some talk about Superman not being in this issue that much but honestly I think those comments are being made from people who need something to complain about. I thought the beginning backstory was good, gave us a good intro into their “class structure” as well as an understanding of what his parents did.
We do get a glimpse of Superman and it is glorious. The art on those pages are really great combined with the great use of colors for fire and destruction. Tbh, I was completely SHOCKED at the reveal of who the agent was at the end. I’m really excited for issue 2 due out in the beginning of December.
Absolute Wonder Woman / Issue #1 / Kelly Thompson & Hayden Sherman
I’m not familiar with Wonder Woman and her origin story as I am with other heroes, since my favorite DC villain is Poison Ivy, I normally just stick to her stories. Now this one started off with a bang and sweet look at some skeleton horse things that I thought were freaking awesome. We get a look at the princess wielding her big ass sword and we find out she was raised in hell.
I really enjoyed this issue because it had that mythology theme to it which I’m sure is all due in part with Wonder Woman’s known origin story. I thought this was exciting and informative with a good balance between them and honestly am excited to learn more about Diana of Themyscira.
I think DC knocked this out the park so far with all three of these titles. I’ve already read issue 2 of Batman and am wanting more and more. Absolute Wonder Woman’s next issue will be out this week on Wednesday and I will be there at opening time to pick it up. After creating some awesome bookmarks from a damaged Absolute Batman issue, I think I want to get an extra issue of Wonder Woman and Superman to complete the trio of bookmarks. Be sure to hit up your local comic shop for the next issues on your Absolute Universe pull list.
